Ryan Reynolds isn't bad as Hal Jordan but the movie plot is just so basic and dull that they just took so many elements from other super hero movies (actual scenes) and mixed in more CGI and a lot of green. I mean the villain is the same sorta entity as the planet eater in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. The last scene with Hal flying above the clouds with a little spin is exactly the same as Superman Returns. If you're gonna take things from other movies, at least do it from good ones.
I was expecting this movie to be more of a space epic and not just a "I'm discovering my self" story. But that seems to be the best way to set up for many movies to follow. Tell a basic story in the first movie then try and build on that for the next 5 years... Lame!
Thumbs Up:
- CGI was pretty good in this movie, although nothing was eye-popping it was pretty solid.
- Reynolds can always seem to deliver a few laughs, no matter what.
- Nice little clip at the end of the credits (always love those).
- Acting was OK, but nothing special since the plot was overly basic.
- Pretty cool to start seeing the scope of the Universe in a movie.
- 1 Hour 45 min.
Thumbs Down:
- Such a basic plot that I didn't really care about the movie, just what cool use of his power would come.
- NO COOL USE OF POWER! I mean if I got a ring that could make thought reality I would have at least had some fun to start. Other then fly around and toss things in the air and make a birthday gift that lasts for 5 minutes he really didn't do much with it.
- Just a set up for sequels to follow.
- Gonna be a pretty easy Halloween costume for DC to make a bit more money on.
- There is no real story with any other character in the movie. We see a bit of other people here and there, but its just one big "Finding my self" Super Hero movie....Spider Man all over again?
In the end I walked away feeling as much as I thought I would feel for this movie. I was entertained and had a few laughs, but I really didn't care too much about what really happened to any of the characters. In fact I can't even really remember their names. The plot was basic and seemed to take from many other movies what were pretty crappy themselves. CGI was pretty good and the back story of the Green Lantern Corps. was pretty solid and great for anyone not a comic nerd. Check it out, it might just be what you need to see on a rainy day....Or not, whatever.
