Normally I prefer my back story to be nice and simple, this film is just an entire back story, not so much a prequel to the X-Men movies but as a different view to a generation we only know so much about.
First Class is a very well done movie, staying true to a lot of the original comic books and back stories of Professor X and of Magneto. Toss in a few familiar faces and perhaps some parents of famous future X-Men and the audience really gets a connection with the movie and what they know about this series so far.
Thumbs Up:
- Great back story within the movie its self. We see both Prof. X and Magneto as kids right off the bat.
- Explains where a lot of the tools the X-Men will use later come from.
- Good amount of comedy, drama, and action.
- 2 Hours and 11 Minutes.
- Kevin Bacon is pretty solid as a bad guy.
- No corny lines and "stupid mutants".
- Evolution of powers through the movie.
- The scene where the only F-Bomb was dropped was awesome!
Thumbs Down:
- How Prof. X looses the use of his legs is kinda weak.
- How does a mutant whose power is to absorb energy (like bullets and explosions) get killed with a coin? But cool to watch in slow-mo.
- Beasts make-up was kinda lame.
- No hidden video at the end of the credits.
- Have to know the X-Men story to get all the subtle hints. Like some names, possible parents of future X-Men, and the "F-Bomb scene".
If you are into Marvel, superheros, X-men or just a fun time at the movies, go check out X-Men: First Class. You don't need to know anything about X-Men to really enjoy it. But it does help to know some to get a lot of this back story. Terrific acting with a good balance of drama, action and comedy is great to see as this years blockbuster season kicks off.
4 - Stars
